First, you need to get to know yourself
Are questions about your career and future direction giving you a headache? How are you supposed to know what job you want and how to pick one? Feeling a bit lost?
Then don’t panic! We’ll help you sort things out and learn a bit more about yourself. Once you understand yourself better, everything about your career path and job choices becomes clearer, and you’ll be more likely to pick something you’ll truly enjoy. So let’s do this! You can go through the exercises on your own, book a consultation, or join one of our workshops or events.
Think it through yourself
Try asking yourself these questions first:
- Hobbies. What do I do in my free time? What would I happily do even for free?
- Work conditions. What time of day — and where — do I work best?
- What I need. What do I need in a job, and what can I live without?
- Behaviour. How do I react when I’m calm? How do I react when I’m stressed?
- Attitude. What does work mean to me?
- Competencies. What are my strengths? What could I improve?
- Motivation. What helps me stay productive at work, and what totally distracts me?
Who are the people I work well with? What’s typical for our relationship? Will this help me figure out when I perform at my best?
Tick which types of interactions with others suit you. Add some examples of how you imagine them:
- Competition
- Leadership
- Management
- Open communication
- Recognition
- Support
- Teamwork
What work activities would you like to do, and which ones would you like to be good at? What tasks usually go well for you? What do others appreciate you for? During which activities do you lose track of time?
Tick a few activities that matter most to you:
- Analytical work with data or information
- Creative work
- Planning activities
- Monitoring tasks
- Physical activities
- Research
- Caring for others
- Communication
- Developing others
- Team coordination
- Explaining or interpreting information
- Influencing or selling
- Conflict resolution
Come for a consultation
Still feeling stuck? Drop by for a consultation. You can join in person or online! Everything is free for MU students and for alumni up to 1 year after graduation. We’ll help you go through your career options.
Listen, find inspiration, inquire
You can also find inspiration at various events, workshops, or even by taming your career doubts by listening to our podcast. Another option is to talk to friends, classmates, or people close to you. You can find out where they’re heading and maybe they’ll nudge you in a direction you hadn’t thought of. You can also try part time jobs, internships, or different types of work to figure out what you might enjoy and what you absolutely don’t. Because knowing what you don’t want is also super useful for moving forward.
Don’t be afraid to try new things and ask others. Everyone started somewhere on their career journey. 🫶
Did you know ...
you might belong to the so-called slash generation? The slash generation is made up of people aged 21–35 who often have more than one job at the same time, usually part time. So if you’re drawn to several jobs and can imagine different paths for yourself, you’re not weird at all, but basically a typical member of your generation.
